🌸Discovering Liechtenstein’s Hidden Majesty

If you’re embarking upon a journey in search of tranquil landscapes, pastoral charm, and Alpine horizons look no further than Liechtenstein. This microstate, often overlooked on the map, offers an unforgettable three-day ride from its southernmost tip to the shimmering north.

Compact Yet Captivating: Liechtenstein’s Dimensions

Liechtenstein stretches approximately 24 km from south to north, and spans 12 km at its widest point.

Vaduz is the official capital nestled along the Rhine River. To the north, you’ll find Schaan, the most populous municipality, known for its industrial and commercial vitality. Schaan lies just above Vaduz and boasts sweeping views of the Alps and rich cultural life.

Three Days in Liechtenstein: E-Biking Through Alpine Splendor

Day 1: Arrival & The E-Bike Hunt

August is high summer and also holiday season in Liechtenstein. I searched high and low for an E-bike to rent, but nearly every shop was closed or empty: one near my hotel was “selling out,” and another—20 minutes away—was shuttered. Frustrated, I crossed into Switzerland to rent an E-bike, shelling out roughly 119 EUR for 24 hours. Bold, impulsive—but oh, so worth it!

Day 2: Pedaling Through Pasture, Peaks, and Prince’s Castle

With my trusty E-bike, I pedaled through sweeping meadows, rolling terrain dotted with horses, and the reassuring greenery that defines much of Liechtenstein’s landscape. The route wound through mountain-dotted valleys rugged, occasionally breath-stealing climbs, but utterly sublime. I made my way to the “Kastel” (Vaduz Castle), where the reigning prince resides. Despite some construction work, the castle’s commanding presence and panoramic views made every uphill struggle worthwhile.

Surprisingly, tourists greeted you with warmth, “Hallo,” laughter, and a welcoming spirit—one of Liechtenstein’s most endearing traits.

Day 3: Vaduz, the Rhine Canal & the Three-Border Vista

I journeyed into Vaduz’s sunlit center, admiring art galleries, government buildings, and the cathedral-lined streets. A few moments later, I found myself riding along the Rhine canal at the point where three countries converge: Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein. Nothing overly dramatic, yet it lends a certain magic to the view.

Heading toward the southern village of Balzers, I glimpsed additional castle-like structures perched on hills, and expansive valley vistas—Liechtenstein’s understated brilliance in full display.

Tips for future travelers ✈️🧳

Best Time to Visit: Spring through summer March to August brings temperate weather and blooming greenery. That said, prepare for cold snaps and windstorms, especially in higher altitudes.

Getting Prepared: E-bike rentals can be scarce, especially in August. Booking in advance or having a fallback plan is key.

Terrain & Safety: Compact though the land is, the terrain is varied: expect steep paths, narrow mountain trails, and hilly cycling routes. Fitness, caution, and good brakes are all essentials.

Small but Welcoming: Liechtenstein’s size is modest, but its hospitality, green valleys, and Alpine architecture are vast in charm.
